North of Auckland New Zealand - The North of Auckland project is being organised by founder Claude Lewenz and designer Carin Wilson with support from Andrew Blake, Wayne Barnes, Bede Roughton and Shar & Michael Henderson. An Auckland project is likely to look north of Auckland within two hours of Auckland International Airport. At present, the stewards are also looking at some of the changes within the Auckland Council district. Previously, the regulatory challenges were seen as too difficult for the first project. However, there are some changes due to the extreme pressure of unaffordable housing. The stewards are in dialogue with the Council exploring what may be possible.
USA - The most interesting site is Mendocino County, California north of San Francisco. In September 2013, the Chair of the Board of Supervisors encouraged the VillageTown stewards to have a look at his county, and seven of us gathered to do so. The county has a lot to offer, especially in terms of access, climate and rural character, but more importantly, it appears that the values of the people of Mendocino have a certain alignment with those of the VillageTown... local, self-reliant, a light environmental footprint. The challenge facing the county is a lack of quality jobs. Attracting businesses to the county requires a reason for them to move. The VillageTown could be that reason. Further, the financial challenges facing the county could be helped by this new source of tax revenue as it is expected that a VillageTown would pay far more property tax than it would demand in county services.
